Gavin Bishop

Gavin Bishop was born in Invercargill, His Maori tribes are Ngati Mahuta (Tainui). At the age of Three he moved to Kingston on Lake Wakatipu.

He started school at Kingston. He would get a ride SOMETIMES! And if he did he would ride on a huge horse with two other children at the back and the horse would gallop to school.

And then in 1955 he moved back to Invercargill, then joined the local Library and discovered the book called “The Hobbit” and he would read that book several times and still think it was inspiring.

At the age of 18 he went to the Canterbury University Of Fine Arts and studied Painting. He was fortunate to be a student when Russell Clark, a well known illustrator, and Rudi Gopas, a very influential painter, to be both taught there. Graduating in 1967 with honours in Art He spent the following year at the Christchurch Secondary Teachers' College.

He then taught art at secondary level for 30 years. 20 years was at Linwood high and the last 10 was at Christ College. Now he writes & Illustrates children's books Full Time.
